Trans Recognition: A Matter of Worth and Dignity
Last week a proposed Illinois law, sponsored by Rep Greg Harris, that would modernize the process for changing the gender marker on a birth certificate passed out of committee and is now headed for a full House vote. HB 1785 is commonsense legislation to drop an outdated, burdensome, and unnecessary surgical requirement that prevents many transgender Illinoisans from obtaining identity documents that reflect their gender identity. Two other bills supporting the rights to gender identity passed out of Senate committees and are ready for votes by the Senate. They are SB 1761, sponsored by Sen. Daniel Biss, which would disallow so-called gay- or trans-panic defenses in murder cases, and SB 1670, sponsored by Sen. Scott Bennett, which is designed to encourage the inclusion of LGBTQ Illinoisans in public service. TAKE ACTION to ask your state representatives to support legislation affirming the dignity of gender identity.
