UUANI NEWS
Q2 2026 www.uuani.org
The Illinois legislative session came to a close this May and the conclusion was distinctly anticlimactic. Rather than focusing on the urgent systemic reforms, housing equity, and environmental justice priorities our communities need, far too much precious time and legislative oxygen in Springfield was consumed by debates surrounding funding for the new Chicago Bears stadium. While it can be disheartening to see corporate interests centered over human needs, this session serves as a stark reminder of why our advocacy network exists. It underscores the need for a persistent, organized, and values-driven presence in Illinois politics. We won't back down from demanding that our legislators prioritize people.
PREPARING FOR THE ELECTION
The critical November election is fast approaching, and UUANI is committed to ensuring our community is equipped to show up powerfully. This past quarter, Natasha and Atena attended intensive training sessions focused specifically on election preparation, voter engagement strategy, and defensive organizing. We are bringing these tools and insights back to the network to support you at the state and local level. Keep an eye out for upcoming regional gatherings, toolkits for election engagement, and opportunities to connect with fellow Unitarian Universalists across Illinois.
Our Solidarity Summit is an opportunity to forge new and deepen existing relationships across the state that are the lifeblood of resistance efforts and make us stronger. We will encourage, learn, ground, and ensure love is at the center of our community response to these unprecedented times.

NATASHA’S NOTES
As I reflect on this past quarter, my heart is incredibly full. It has been a true joy and privilege getting to know so many of you, personally, during my recent visits across the state. Meeting our dedicated congregants and passionate partners has grounded me in the deep, vital spirit of this network. At the same time, this quarter offered a front-row seat to the literal "sausage-making" of legislative negotiation in Springfield—a process that, as you know, can be as frustrating as it is complex.
In times like these, it is completely natural to feel the weight of the world. So many of us are tired. We are worn down by systemic roadblocks, by the tragedies we are witnessing, and at times, we might even find ourselves despairing over all the things we cannot single-handedly fix or do.
But what I have seen in our community is that while we may be tired, we are also incredibly powerful. We may be worn down, but we are deeply united. And most importantly, even in moments of despair, we remain crystal clear on one fundamental truth: we must continue to show up.
Our presence, our values, and our collective voice are needed now more than ever. Thank you for walking this path with me, for your resilience, and for your unwavering commitment to our shared justice work.
In faith and solidarity
